King of Wands Aide-Memoire
Imagine Aragorn, from Lord of the Rings, the ranger (come King) charging into battle against the host of Mordor. But, rather than wielding a sword, in our image, unusually, he grasps a glowing wand. Behind him a vast army of men cheer, and then follow.
Aragorn typifies the courageous hero who men will follow to their doom: the natural born leader – capable of great things and destined for success.

King of Wands Key Themes:
Natural born leader, visionary, honorable, optimistic, confident, experienced, action oriented, fearless, benevolence, motivational, successful.

The King of Wands within the Tarot Deck.
The Suit of Wands Tarot cards represent growth and ambition. They also resonate with competition, primal energy, inspiration and original thought. All associated with fire they tend to be ‘hot’ personalities. As such they are more wild, charismatic and unpredictable than the other suits. The Suite of Wands cards correspond with the zodiac fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

The King Court Cards within a Tarot Deck all have similarities too. They all contain maturing of themes that begins with the Page cards, and ends with the King cards. The Page cards represent young hopeful qualities at the very beginning of a journey. The Knights represent inexperienced people ‘on the journey’. The Queen cards represent people arriving at the destination. The Kings are people who have fully arrived at their destination. They are emotionally stable visionaries. They take responsibility for others well-being.

The King of Wands Tarot Card Image:
In the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck, we see a picture of an opulently dressed man wearing a crown. He sits upon a throne with a lizard scuttling near his feet. The man grips a sprouting wooden stave (wand) in one hand. His cape and throne are decorated with images of lions and salamanders

The elements of the image, of course, refer to the qualities of the card. The image shown is bright and vibrant. The salamanders and the lions symbolize fire, strength and courage among transformation. The salamanders biting their own tails give imagery of infinity and the determination to overcome all obstacles.
King of Wands
King of Wands (Upright) General Meanings Explained:
The King of Wands is a capable leader who gives optimism to those around him. He’s not only manifested how to achieve goals himself, but also how to lead others to complete his goals for him. He has energy, creativity and staying power – the complete masculine leader.
If the Tarot Reading question involves a person (you or another), then the answer will indicate that the you (or other) in this situation will be as of the King of Wands: successful, charismatic, capable of leading others, optimistic etc.
If the question relates to a situation, then success, optimism and abundance are likely too.
But how can we take this idea, of the Knight of Wands... and place the qualities onto any particular question asked of the Tarot, in any sort of Tarot Spread? How can these sorts of themes relate to the past present or future, to the sub-conscious and/or the conscious? How can they relate to other people or oneself?
Well this is where your intuition will help provide an answer.
Some Tarot Readers like to crowbar the exact same card meaning into any situation. Some Tarot card readers like to leave the meaning of a card totally to whatever impulses and images arise when viewing the card (even if such ideas don’t in any way relate to the normal understanding of what a certain Tarot card means).
I like to take the concept of the Golden Mean in balancing card doctrine and intuition in my own readings. The Golden Mean corresponds loosely to a ratio of 1.6 to 1. It’s a ratio that has been known since ancient times, and which some people say appears recurrently in beautiful things in nature as well as in other things that are seen as “Beautiful”.
So, I might take 3 parts ‘card doctrine’ with 2 parts the images and thoughts that arise on seeing the card... as the basis for my reading.
So let’s take the example where a young woman makes a tarot reading on a query as to what she should do in her gap year, before university. She draws an upright King of Wands and places it on a simplified Celtic Cross Spread, at position 8 (external influences). This position highlights the people, energies or events which will affect the outcome and are beyond the querent’s control.
I see an elder man, possibly her father or her grandfather, sitting down beside the young woman. His eyes are alight as he describes all the fantastic wonders he has seen so far in his life ... and proceeds to give the young woman his advice on what activities might suit her gap year.
My reading of this card is that an older male figure, probably a relative, will insist on giving their advice, and actually the querent could find they are very good ideas.  If she takes onboard some of those ideas will likely lead positive consequences for her Gap Year.

King of Wands (Reversed) General Meanings Explained:
The King of Wands reversed, can have scary connotations. It’s looking at the King of Wands through a dark lens. Generally it refers to someone who has an ambition to be a great leader, but isn’t. This can make them try to ‘force things’. They could be controlling, or manipulative. They could be delusional (believing they are performing great deeds, when actually they are just ruining whatever relationship, company or project they are involved in). They might just simply constantly make poor decisions.
This could be you, or someone else, depending on your query to the Tarot.
The reversed card might be indicating that just one particular aspect of an Upright King of Wands is now strongly corrupted. So the reverse card could refer to someone who is actually in a leadership role, but clearly failing. Or someone who has quite good leadership skills and abilities, but now the fire and enthusiasm has left them burnt out. Or, the reversed card could indicate a possible future (and so warning) not to take on a leadership position.
Court cards often refer to a person (you or another), but if the Reversed King of Wands is drawn in relation to a situational question, then that situation will likely run into poor leadership, poor decision making and failure. So, to give an example, what if the following question were asked:  ‘What is the deeper reason for this sudden turn of events?”. A reverse King of Wands would suggest that somewhere poor decisions are being made, possibly by a poor leader who possibly thinks s(he) is actually a good leader. Whatever is trying to be achieved might be ‘forced’.

King of Wands (Upright) Love Meanings & Relationship Outcomes:
Was the King of Wands drawn in connection with romance question? 'How (s)he sees me', 'How someone feels about you', 'Does (s)he love me'? Well the card is a fairly good sign. Your (potential?) partner probably adores you, but it's possible they could be a bit dictatorial in any relationship you have with them. You would need to give them plenty of freedom too, they would not want to feel 'constricted'.
If you are a true King of Wands, or your person of interest is, then they will be good for you, they will take you in and take care of you.
The King of Wands can be a fantastic lover and love. Most things they involve themselves in succeed, and so will your love affair or relationship.

Will everything be perfect? Possibly, as long as you understand that this is a creative leader of people, who needs to be given the space to fulfill their potential. They will make time for you, they will treat you well, but they do need to be involved in their other projects to be fulfilled. Don’t be too possessive of their time.

If you aspire to, or even are, a great leader too, there could be sparks. Even the most capable and wise leaders don’t always get on perfectly together.

What about more situational type of romance’ questions, like ‘Will I meet my soulmate soon? What might a King of Wands mean given such a question? Well the possibilities are more varied, and will depend on what is happening in your life. At a basic level the result if very positive, could probably just say mean ‘yes – you will’. But if you wish more detail, the King of Wands here might indicate:
  • Your soulmate will be a natural charismatic leader
  • A capable and natural leader will help you meet your soulmate. That leader could be your boss at work (but sometimes the most natural leaders are not those actually in a position of power in an organisation)
  • You yourself are a popular natural leader, juggling many tasks successfully, and leading many people on many projects. You are successful, emotionally secure and enjoying your life. However, you are not giving yourself the time to go out and meet new romantic interests.

King of Wands (Reversed) Love & Relationship Meanings and Outcomes:
The King of Wands reversed, has negative connotations for love. Again, what the card is telling you depends a lot on the question you asked. Here are possible interpretations:
  • The person you are interested in thinks they are a great leader of people. Actually they could be poor leaders, bullies of others and general incompetents. Their ego outstrips their ability. It’s likely they are more in love with themselves, than they ever will be of you. They have a good chance of being unfaithful.
  • If you yourself are the subject of the Tarot Reading, then it could be that you are someone who has a higher opinion of yourself and abilities than fits reality. Could your inflamed ego deter potential romantic interests from staying with you (or even agreeing to meet you in the first place)?
  • Another possible meaning if the subject of the question is yourself (for instance, will I ever find try love), could relate to unrealistic expectations.  You set your heart on an upright King of Wands type person (a wonderful charismatic, emotional mature person that many people adore), but the King of Wands indicates a corrupted version of that situation ‘i.e. you are not capable of being romantically linked with such a person. Can you lower your expectations to more realistic levels?

King of Wands (Upright) Career and Work Meanings and Outcomes:
The King of Wands here indicates you could be performing well in your work/career. You are inspiring people, achieving success, handling many projects. You have the experience and emotional maturity to tackle difficult tasks and see them through to completion. You delegate people with the most suitable skills to each sub-goal.
If you are in a position of leadership, your workers will find you inspiring right now. You will have the experience and wisdom to guide them and their difficulties towards positive ends, and manage to bring out their ‘best selves’.
People gravitate towards you now, because you are manifesting what you envision.
Depending on the question asked of the Tarot, a King of Wands might suggest that a natural leader will come into your sphere, who could help you in your career. This might involve mentorship from your boss at work. It could mean an executive from another department or company who gives you crucial wisdom on how to improve your own performance.
Another angle, depending on the question asked, is that you could apply for a promotion or new job now, even if you thought that such a job was slightly beyond you. Maybe the advice is even to set-up your own business - if feasible.

King of Wands (Reverse) Career and Work Meanings and Outcomes:
The King of Wands reversed might indicate you’ve taken on too much work, and that you are beginning to struggle. You could be delegating poorly, not giving the wisdom and inspiration required to those that follow you. Rather than forging into projects with fire and optimism, you have become passive.
In your frustration you might be bullying people and/or blaming others when things go wrong.
If you are not the focus of the question posed to the Tarot, then the cards might indicate that you will become a victim of a reversed King of Wands – a mature person of influence (possibly your boss). They might bully you, give you poor advice, knock your enthusiasm and perhaps hamper your career.

A reverse King of Wands can also be a warning to you to be careful before applying for a new job or promotion. Are you sure you have the capabilities to step into that role? Could you be too ambitious?

King of Wands (Upright) Yes/No Meanings:
The King of Wands, drawn upright, means YES. Yes for General readings. Yes for Love. Yes for Career. Yes for Relationships.

King of Wands (Reverse) Yes/No Meanings:
The King of Wands card drawn in reverse means ‘No’. It means ‘No’ for General readings, ‘no’ for Love, ‘no’ for Career and ‘no’ for Relationships.

Do you need a Professional Tarot Card Reading?

For a Video Tarot Card Reading we would recommend you consulting one of the reputable tarot/psychic reading companies recommended on our website – to gain an understanding of your situation from an expert experienced Tarot Card Reader. For a truly unique Email Tarot Reading... we would of course recommend our own service, which include 'actionable suggestions' to help you try to steer fate.

Are King of Wands Predictions Predestined?
No. They represent a possible strand of fate.

Action you can take if a King of Wands card indicates a poor outcome:
In my Email Tarot Reading Service I try to give good actionable advice to people, not just tell them that this or that is liable to be their fate (or their challenge in life). Below are some brief ideas:
A reverse King of Wands might suggest that you are too arrogant. Could this be true? Do you interrupt others a lot? Do you feel contempt/irritation for a lot of people? Do you struggle in relationships?
Here is a tip for you: Arrogance surfaces from inferiority. You might feel nervous that someone has more qualifications than you, then feel great when you realize you earn more than them. Then you decide earnings are more important than qualifications, and so you are superior to them. Just remember... each notch of arrogance occurs when something or somebody makes you feel inferior first.
A reverse King of Wands could also indicate you are too ambitious. Might that be true? Are your goals un-realistic? Do you pursue goals at the expense of your health, your friends and your family? Do you take too many risks?
Here is a tip for you: Excessive ambition tends to come from the same well as arrogance... a feeling of being inferior to others (and so having to achieve that much more to be ‘at the same level’ as others). To feel better about yourself and what you have, in this moment, take time each day to be grateful for the good things in your life. Regular practice of Gratefulness can help tone down your need to over-excel.
A King of Wands might indicate you are being hampered by an inept bullying boss.
Here is a tip: Start looking for another job. But, in the meantime write down details of even the smallest instance of bullying, so that if you feel ready to report the bullying behavior to HR you will have an extensive list of situations to prove your point. On balance the HR department or other bosses will view an attack on another Boss as an attack on them unless you have good and provable evidence.
